Hello,
I'm Shane
👋🏻
I'm a designer leader working in UX/UI, Product design & Branding
I'm a hybrid professional working at the intersection of Brand, User Experience (UX) and Interface Design (UI). I'm passionate about design, tech and all things digital.
I have worked with agencies, startups and large corporates – sometimes offering a design service and others as the in-house specialist. I’ve lead design teams while being a mentor along the way. On occasion I freelance and have consulted on numerous projects. I strive to always stay on top of my game by learning new things and gaining new experiences.
With over 20 years of practise, I’ve managed to hone a unique set of skills that set me apart. I am a true ’T-shaped’ designer with deep skills in UX, UI and brand design.
Growing up, I had always wanted to become an artist, but as I grew older, I realised that making a successful career out of it would be difficult. After high school, I had no idea what to do. All I had was a talent for art. So, I took a gap year, and traveled to America, stopping over in Egypt to see the pyramids along the way. I backpacked all over the States, ticking items off my bucket list along the way. I stayed in the odd hostel, but most of the time I slept on the overnight Greyhound bus on to my next destination. (I was on a shoestring budget, and had to watch every penny!)
While over there, I remember having a phone call from my parents. They wanted to know if I had figured out what I wanted to do with my life… I still had no clue. My parents had visited a new university campus not far from our home in South Africa. They'd seen a Graphic Design course which covered many subjects, including fine art. My mother encouraged me to give it a try, she assured me I could always drop out if I decided I did not like it. I needed to do something, so I gave it a shot.
During my three year graphic design diploma, I produced lots of art. I was also introduced to a brand new application called Macromedia Flash as part of my studies. This opened my eyes to a whole new world of interaction design I had never seen before, I was obsessed with it!
A new digital world was emerging, the internet was taking off and I wanted to be a part of if. Continuing down my new path, I completed my post-graduate degree in multimedia interaction and digital design, graduating as one of the top students in 2003.
My career kicked-off while I was still doing my degree. My lecturer asked me to help him on some big multimedia projects he was working on. The editor of New Age Gaming (NAG) magazine saw my work and hired me to produce interactive CD’s for their magazine. I also worked for their partner company, Replay, designing and authoring DVD’s for several movies being distibuted within the country.
Before completing my degree in late 2003, I was offered my first full-time job at Graphicor, a design agency. I designed and coded hundreds of interactive CDs and DVDs. Working there, I mastered Adobe Flash as a designer and developer (Adobe had acquired Macromedia by that time).
Working for different agencies, over the next 5 years, I learnt video and motion graphics, worked on pitches, designed several award winning corporate websites and taught myself how to code in html and CSS.
By late 2007 agency life had burnt me out, I needed a change. I accepted a job as a in-house designer at publishing company Creamer Media. Leading a small design team and working my way up to Creative Director. I managed the video studio, designed all their sub-brand websites and helped expand their brand internationally.
In 2015 I moved over to a new startup agency, Zoobiscuit. I was going to help lead their web design and UX/UI offerings. But, a few months after joining, we were acquired by corporate and investment bank, RMB. I now lead the internal design studio there, working on several UX/UI projects. I build design systems and lead the design of all their public facing websites across Africa, India, UK and USA. In 2020, along with our agency partners, I helped lead the company's rebrand, going on to win a bronze medal in the 2021 Loerie awards.
While doing my graphic design diploma, I learnt to play guitar and for my 21st, I got my first electric guitar. Playing guitar was an alternate creative outlet and it occupied most of my free time. I started a Hard Rock/Metal band called Inastait, we wrote our own music and played many gigs. We played together for several years until the band dissolved in early 2010.
I live in South Africa with my wife and two kids. I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, travel and watching movies.

Good design is intentional. It requires attention to technical detail & problem-solving skills, from those that are rational, analytical & objective, to those that are inspired, artistic & subjective.
It follows a brief & meets a deadline – delivering what clients want, when they want it. UX, UI, information architecture, video, audio, motion graphics, copy & graphic design. What I do is a convergence of all these.
What sets me apart is more than just design skill, but a synergy of experience, technical understanding, strategic thinking & a burning passion for excellence.
